1. Axle will install either way but I'm sure the engineers planned on the nut being on the end that would cause it to tighten against the swing arm if the axle were to turn in the bearings, that would make it the drive side.
2. Wrench for the axle nut is the box end and slip over handle extension in the tool kit. I use mine all the time on Honda 200 valve cover adjusters and have to remember to put it back in the bike tool kit. It is 24mm as I remember. There are few fasterners that need a 1/2 " drive, would suggest the 3/8 size first, then 1/4 supplemented with a select 1/2 drive sockets and handle as needed. Unless you are in need of a 'chrome fix' being a 'tool junkie' like me. Then just get all the chrome wrenches your life style will allow. Buy the best quality you can afford, a cheap wrench rounding off the corners of a nut or bolt damaging your hand isn't worth the $ saved or pain of messed up fasterners.
